Ingredients and allergens

Labels and back panels for packaged food that meet the Food Standards Code and still look designed. Ingredients, allergens, nutrition panels, country of origin and the Health Star Rating, built in from the start.
Food label design is the design of the mandatory information on a food pack, and the layout that makes it work alongside the brand: the name of the food, ingredients, allergens, the nutrition information panel, date marking, country of origin, supplier details and net quantity.
The law is written for food technologists and lawyers. Legibility is a legal requirement, not a design preference: Standard 1.2.9 requires mandatory information to be legible, prominent, in English and in a colour that contrasts distinctly with the background. Warning statements have a minimum type height of 3 mm, or 1.5 mm on small packages.
Morice&Co. designs food packaging for national brands including the Helga's ranges with Barker Brand Partners and DON Crafted with Disegno, and writes the studio's guide to Australian food labelling requirements.
Mandatory information takes a fixed amount of space at a legal size. Measure it first and the front can be designed with confidence instead of reflowed at the end.
They are barcodes that do not verify and mandatory labelling that is present but not legible. Good label design prevents both.
It is voluntary today, but a mandate proposal is in consultation. Leaving room now avoids a reprint later.
Every element has a rule, a size and a best position. Together they decide the back panel.

A packaged food sold in Australia must carry the name of the food, a statement of ingredients with allergens declared in bold and a separate Contains statement, a nutrition information panel, date marking, the supplier's name and Australian address, lot identification, country of origin using the standard mark, and the net quantity in the size trade measurement law sets for the pack.
Not yet. The Health Star Rating is voluntary today. In February 2026 food ministers asked FSANZ to prepare a proposal to mandate it, and Proposal P1067 is in consultation. It is worth designing the front of pack to carry it now rather than reflowing artwork later.
Plain English Allergen Labelling is the Food Standards Code format for allergen declarations. Allergens must be named using the required terms, shown in bold in the ingredient list, and summarised in a separate Contains statement placed next to the ingredients.
Updating the back of pack on a single existing product typically starts from a few thousand dollars. A full pack redesign starts around AUD $5,000 to $10,000, and a range system with compliant templates across five to ten SKUs sits in the $20,000 to $60,000 range. Fixed fee, scoped to the brief.
Morice&Co. designs labels to the Food Standards Code and the retailer specifications and flags issues early, but is not a food regulatory consultant. The brand owner is responsible for the content, and complex products should be checked by a food technologist or regulatory specialist.
