What does Chemist Warehouse packaging need?

Chemist Warehouse packaging design is the design of retail packs, cartons and shippers for brands ranged at Chemist Warehouse and other Australian pharmacies, across vitamins, supplements, OTC medicines, skincare and personal care.

Chemist Warehouse is the largest pharmacy retailer in Australia and a price-led one. It publishes supplier compliance guidelines, it sells heavily through catalogues and online, and it only accepts stock with twelve months of shelf life remaining. For vitamins and supplements, the TGA governs the label before the retailer does.

Morice&Co. has worked on brands ranged at Chemist Warehouse, including the Cenovis heritage rebuild, co-designed with Cowan Design, and the Australian Glow self-tan range rebuild.

00Our position

At Chemist Warehouse, the catalogue is the shelf.

A large share of the selling happens in the catalogue and online. The front panel has to work as a thumbnail, not just at arm's length.

Price-led does not mean cheap-looking.

Shoppers come for the price and choose on trust. The pack has to look worth more than it costs, beside brands that are often discounted.

Plan artwork changes like a supply chain.

Product changes need notice, and a major artwork change can need a fresh new-line process. A pack system designed to last saves months.

01What we design

What we design for pharmacy.

Retail units, cartons and the brand system that ties them together, across the categories pharmacy sells.

Vitamins and supplements

TGA-compliant labels and cartons with a range system that reads clearly in a wall of competitors.

Skincare and personal care

Beauty-aisle craft for pharmacy shelves, where trust and price sit side by side. Australian Glow was rebuilt for this shelf.

OTC and health products

Clear, calm packs where directions and warnings do real work.

Catalogue and online assets

Front panels and pack shots designed to hold up as a catalogue thumbnail and a website tile.

Shippers and cartons

Inner and outer cartons with the barcodes and carton markings the supply chain expects.

Range launches

New lines planned around the new-line process, so artwork is ready when the buyer is.

02The rules

Chemist Warehouse supplier realities.

From the retailer's published supplier compliance guidelines, with the TGA rules underneath for medicines.

New Line Form and MyChemID

Ranging runs through a New Line Form and a buyer. Once approved, the line gets a MyChemID and goes live.

90 days notice for changes

Product changes need 90 days notice. A hard change, including a major artwork change, needs a fresh New Line Form.

GS1 barcodes

EAN-13 on the retail unit, ITF-14 or GS1-128 on inners and cartons, printed to the size and position rules in the guidelines.

Carton markings

Product description, part number, batch and expiry, quantity and gross weight printed in English on cartons.

Twelve months shelf life

Stock must arrive with twelve months of shelf life remaining, so date coding and expiry legibility are designed in.

TGA first for medicines

Vitamins, supplements and OTC medicines follow the TGA labelling order. TGO 116 replaced TGO 92 from October 2026, with a five-year transition.

03Selected work

Work that proves it.

Cenovis, co-designed with Cowan Design, and Australian Glow are both ranged at Chemist Warehouse.

FAQCommon questions

Questions about Chemist Warehouse Packaging Design.

  • Chemist Warehouse publishes Supplier Compliance Guidelines through its EDI partner MessageXchange. New products are ranged through a New Line Form and a buyer, and receive a MyChemID once approved. Product changes need 90 days notice, and a major artwork change needs a new New Line Form. Barcodes follow GS1, cartons carry set markings, and stock must arrive with twelve months of shelf life remaining. Vitamins and medicines must also meet the TGA labelling order.

  • Design for the catalogue and the website as much as the shelf. A clear range system, a front panel that reads as a thumbnail, and a pack that looks worth more than its price beside discounted competitors. In vitamins, colour by need or life stage and a confident claim hierarchy beat louder graphics.

  • Yes. Morice&Co. contributed to the Cenovis heritage rebuild, co-designed with Cowan Design, and rebuilt the Australian Glow self-tan range, both sold through Chemist Warehouse.

  • Plan for the design project plus the retailer's process. Packaging design typically takes eight to sixteen weeks, and product changes at Chemist Warehouse need 90 days notice. Building the artwork around the supplier rules from the start avoids a second round.
